Title: “Sunrise From Whitehead, Mohegan Island, ME”
Medium: an oil on oak panel
Size: 8” x 10”
Frame: gold leaf floater frame.
Michael E. Vermette painted this plein air sunrise view of Black Head from Whitehead on Mohegan Island, a spectacular out-to-sea view. This is a quick oil study painted in the morning in July using Michael’s unique impasto style of thick strokes of paint on solid oak stone-coated gypsum gessoed panel, just as the master painter’s in Monhegan’s rich history. Michael uses a descriptive palette knife stroke that captures clean colors and lines of power and motion of the mornings first light on the southern coast of the island. He paints in an impasto style using a palette knife and Venetian Black Oil Wax medium that he adds to the oil paint to increase its viscosity and improve the color to a brighter velvety glow. This painting is also painted on a highly prized gypsum gessoed on solid oak, which he makes himself using a traditional recipe. This painting is high quality all the way down to the gold leaf floater frame that highlights the work in it’s jewel like colors.
